What is a Server?


A server is a computer program or device that provides services to other programs and users. Servers can be computers, software programs, or hard drives. 
Moreover, what a Server does is Data is sent, received, and stored by a server. Basically, a server is there to offer services. Multiple services may be offered through a server, which can be a computer, software application, or even a storage device.
Any Desktop Computer can be used as Server with which other computers are connected for Data related Services. But the are not able to handle heavy work related for Data related Services. Hence, Different machine are used for vast and heavy works.


Types of Servers

  1. Web server
    A web server is a computer that stores and delivers web content to users over the internet. It can be hardware, software, or both.
  2. Mail server
    A mail server, also known as an email server, is a software program that sends and receives emails. It acts as a central hub for email communication, managing the flow of messages between email clients and the internet.
  3. Application server
    An application server is a network computer that stores and runs applications for client computers. It’s a type of platform middleware that sits between the operating system (OS), external resources, and the user’s applications. The application server’s function is to host the user’s business logic and facilitate access to and performance of the business application. An application server must perform despite: Variable and competing traffic of client requests, Hardware and software failures, and The distributed nature of larger-scale applications. An application server works with the web server to return a dynamic, customized response to a client request.
  4. Database server
    A database server is a powerful computer that stores and manages data, and is a key part of a client/server computing environment. Database servers are used for storing and retrieving data requested by other applications, and can ensure access controls meet organizational risk management requirements. They can work for a small office staff or a global network of individual users.
    A database server is any server that runs a network database application and maintains database files, such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle. SQL Server is a high-performance database management system.
  5. DNS server
    A Domain Name System (DNS) server is a machine that translates domain names into IP addresses, so that browsers can load internet resources. The DNS system is like a phone book for the internet, and it contains a database of public IP addresses and their corresponding domain names. When a user types a domain name into their browser, the DNS server finds the correct IP address for that site. The browser then uses the IP address to communicate with the origin server or CDN edge server to access the website.
